This award is given each year in honor of Georgia's own Petey Giroux, our first state coordinator and the first for River of Words in the nation. Petey's lifelong devotion to environmental protection, water education and wildlife won her many awards and the love and respect of countless educators. She left a legacy of creative and energetic environmental educational programs that still enhance the lives of Georgia's students today. The dragonfly, an indicator of clean water and a favorite of Petey's, is symbolic of her free-thinking and fun-loving high spirits. Our choice of artwork for this award reflects what we think Petey would have picked.
Each year, the national River of Words program selects 8 grand prize winners from among the thousands of entries they receive: 4 poems and 4 art works representing the 4 age groups of the contest. Georgia has had remarkable recognition in grand prize winners throughout the years.
